Easter Egg Hunt at Gibside | Exploring Northumberland
Heading over to the North East for the second week of the 2026 Easter holidays meant we had to plan at least one day out. After last year's fun on the National Trust Easter egg hunts, heading to Gibside for theirs was a no brainer. Read on to discover our day out at Gibside With some of my favourite photos.
About Gibside
With miles of woodland walking trails on the edge of Newcastle, this Grade I-listed park and garden is a hidden gem, and somewhere I wish we'd found earlier!
After a varied history with the Bowes family, the National Tust took over the restoration of the 720-acre Georgian landscape and stabilise the historic hall in the 1960s. Now you can wander the grounds, check out the chapel, explore the stables, visit the organery and so much more.

Is it accessible and suitable for children?
With several walks in a variety of lengths available for different abilities, a shuttle bus for those who want to visit places such as the stables but may not be up to walking that far, equipment hire such as wheelchairs and mobility vehicles, child-friendly activities such as the 2026 Easter trail, and even a sensory station to borrow items to support your visit, Gibside is one of the best sites we have visited for children and accessibility.
Can you take dogs to Gibside?
Dogs on leads are welcome at Gibside for walks along 15 miles of paths, inside the Market Place Café and Carriage House Coffee Shop, and off lead in the designated enclosed area beside the stables. Gibside also offers dog-friendly treats, “Paws for Water” doggy drink spots, and a cleaning station for muddy paws.
N.B. Only assistance dogs are allowed inside the chapel, and must not sit on chairs only the floor inside the café.
Is there anywhere to eat?
There are plenty of spots to enjoy a bite to eat at Gibside such as the Market Place Café, Gibside Pizza Pit, Red Kite Kiosk, and more. Plus of course there are plenty of picnic benches available to bring your own food if you prefer!
Are there facilities available?
Standard, adapted, and baby change facilities are available at Gibside both in the main Market Place area, and the Strawberry Castle play area. It's great to see step free, accessible, toilets as standard on sites like this, and there was plenty available so even with it being busy during the Easter holidays we were able to get the little ones sorted with ease.
It may be the first time we've visited, but I have no doubt it won't be the last. I hope that this post is helpful, and that you're able to use it to make your own trip for this lovely, family-friendly day out in Northumberland.
