Pregnancy is hard work and there’s no doubt you deserve some time away to rest and relax before your bundle of joy arrives. But how do you choose the perfect holiday?

Some mothers-to-be will already have an idea of where they want to go, but if you’re stuck and need some inspiration, here are four holiday ideas to get you started. Happy travelling!

The City Break

If your favourite thing about travel is discovering a different culture and different food, a city break is an ideal choice. You don’t have to miss out on sightseeing just because you’re pregnant; you just need to keep a gentle pace and take breaks when you need to.

As for trying the local cuisine, as long as you stick to the NHS guidelines on foods to avoid during pregnancy, you should still be able to enjoy new dishes. If in doubt, ask the waiters or chef for clarification — most restaurants are very accommodating and will do their best to reassure you.

The Beach Holiday

Like your getaways with a hefty dose of sun, sand, and sea? You can’t beat a beach holiday. Take a stroll along the boardwalk, paddle in clear blue waters, or sit back and relax on pristine white sand and watch the world go by.

As a bonus, there are added health benefits to spending time by the coast. Research shows that it can heighten relaxation, help you sleep better, and boost your vitamin D levels (just make sure you protect yourself with an SPF).

The Country Getaway

If being away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life sounds like your idea of heaven, an escape to the countryside will suit you. Enjoy beautiful views of the rural scenery as you go on walks, or cosy up by a roaring fire with a book — you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your hotel room if you don’t want to.

The Spa Retreat

Now is the time to treat yourself and be pampered, and what better way to do that than with a spa retreat? Many spas now have treatments designed especially to cater for the needs of pregnant women, such as prenatal massages and facials.

You could also go for a classic manicure or pedicure — just make sure your therapist knows about your pregnancy before they get started. Check out Baby Centre for more tips on visiting a spa while pregnant.
