The Mother's Day UK date is nearly upon us. Having just had a baby, I kind of missed the count down to Mother's Day on March 22nd. That being said, I couldn’t let it pass by without sharing Mother's Day gift ideas (including ones you don't have to buy!) to help you give your mum a very happy Mother's Day.

The small things that can make a big difference

“Some old fashioned things such as fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.”

Go for a walk

Fresh air goes a long way to helping everyone relax, and feel better. Mums are so often on the go 24/7 and mentally can take a bit of hit at times (especially when there is the sensationalising of subjects in the media like with Covid-19 at the moment!) Getting outside for a walk can help to blow off the cobwebs, and escape from everything for a little while. It also has the added bonus of helping youngsters run off their excess energy (children having an early night is good for mum too!)

“You + me + cuddle + movie = I like that.”

Snuggle up for movie night

As much as getting outside is good for everyone, sometimes all you want is to snuggle up inside. Pick out your mum's favourite movie, open a bag of popcorn, snuggle up under a cosy blanket and enjoy! It's a great way to spend time together. It's also a calm, family activity that gives your mum a fighting chance at sitting down for longer than 5 minutes. After all, us mums are usually running around doing household jobs and answering to someone calling for one thing or another.

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”

Do the household chores

If you're old enough, do things to help mum around the house. Make your own snacks and drinks. Clean up after yourself. Do the vacuuming, dusting, washing up and more. There are plenty of jobs which can be allocated to children of all ages. Why not go one stop further and agree to do chored for more than just one day too?

“A home-cooked meal is a labour of love.”

Cook a meal (or even better, breakfast in bed!)

For me, Mother's Day will be John's first day off after 5 days of looking after the three children on my own and I’m looking forward to a break from preparing meals for the girls on my own, often while breastfeeding Munchkin. John, if you're reading this, waffles and fruit for breakfast in bed sounds fab-u-lous! Alternatively, a nice, homemade meal, (and maybe a glass of fruity, sparkling rose Cuvee* complete with gold flecks!) is a great idea to treat mums like me this Mother's Day. For a real winner, let mum enjoy a candlelit bubble bath while you cook.

“If you want to change the world, pick up a pen and write.”

Homemade cards and handwritten letters

I think some of the most special gifts are those made or written by hand. This is especially true for mums with young children. Whilst some of my girls’ ‘artwork’ I may not love their homemade cards are always treasured (especially now Squidgy can write in them herself!) Why not give her the perfect additional gift alongside your written note or handmade card in the form of a fancy new pen or gift set from Pen Heaven*. From beautiful, sleek ball points to exciting, old-fashioned feather quill pens and even note pads and diaries, there are fabulous gift ideas available.

Gift ideas you can buy for mum

“We take photos as a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone.”

There is literally nothing better than having a house full of photos and memories (in my opinion anyway!) Here are a couple of my favourite photo gift ideas.

Photo frames and blocks

I have some lovely photo blocks, snowglobes and more from Funky Pigeon, and love them all. So, what better this Mother's Day than a “Mummy” photo block. Simply pick out your favourite photo (in my case it's the three children from Munchkin's newborn photoshoot) and Funky Pigeon will put it all together ready to gift on Mothering Sunday.

Memories on canvas

When the girls celebrated John's first Father's Day with them in the world, I ordered a selection of canvases printed with their memories from their newborn photoshoots. It only seems fair that we have Funky Pigeon* canvases with Munchkin's newborn photos on them as a Mother's Day gift for me! These canvases can come as a set (like mine) or individual… and can also be ordered in a number of different sizes. There is something for every budget!

“Mums are like flowers, each is beautiful and unique.”

Every mum loves a bouquet of flowers

Flowers have long been (and will continue to be) an easy, yet perfect gift idea for pretty much every mum on Mother's Day. I love the addition of fresh, beautiful flowers to my home; and Appleyard London bouquets* are certainly that! From delicate pink roses with white lilies to the bright summer shades of germini and agapanthus there are bouquets to suit different tastes and budgets available. If you want something with a bit of a longer life than fresh cut flowers, however, they also offer a range of house plants and orchids too.

“Life is short, eat the sweet treats first!”

A basket of treats

I love a good hamper, especially one with exciting and/or tasty treats inside. With a hamper from Hamper.com* you’re bound to find something your mum will love from gin to wine to non-alcoholic; and sweets to biscuits to chocolate. The best part is you can even get the hampers delivered direct to your mum, with a free gift message included. So if, like me, you live away from your mum, you can make sure she still gets treated on Mother's Day.

“To gin, or not to gin… silly question!”

A little tipple for mum

Do you have a favourite tipple? Those of us who indulge in the occasional alcoholic beverage usually do. For me it has to be a good old G&T, but gin doesn’t have to be plain and boring. With the il Gusto flavoured gins* why not treat your gin loving mum for Mother's Day? From raspberry and rosemary to Turkish delight to elderflower there are so many different flavours to choose from, and they even come in different shaped decanters. Hearts, diamonds and even shoes are available to order. If your mum isn't a fan of gin, they also offer vinegars, vodkas and more complete with a “Happy Mother’s Day” personalisation on the bottles or decanters.

“Self-care is giving the world the best of you, instead of what's left of you.”

A day at the spa

In my opinion, when looking for ideal gifts, a Red Letter Days voucher* will always be a winner. There are so many choices available to suit every type of mum from the adventurous to the ones (like me!) who need a break and time to relax. A spa day is number one on my gift list pretty much every year. The great thing is there is a nice long use-by date on these vouchers. With a potential UK lockdown looming, this gift is one with plenty of time to be used; perfect if it can’t be done immediately after gifting it on Mothering Sunday.

Self-care at home

If you'd prefer, why not treat your to some products to have a spa day at home instead? From face masks to manicures, there are plenty of ways to enjoy a relaxing time together in the comfort of your own home. Why not check out the products available at Leighton Denny and pick out a nice new nail polish colour, fancy nail file* or luxurious lotion* to get you started with a collection of products perfect for your mum to enjoy a bit of in-house pampering.

So, with just a few days to go, you now have a few ideas for celebrating UK Mother's Day 2020. I hope you now have some amazing Mother' Day gifts and ideas to treat your mum this year. After all, she really is a superhero. All that is left to say is, to all the mamas out there:

Happy Mother's Day!
